Doing What You Can Do
January was probably the busiest month of my professional career. Consequently, I did not exercise as much as I would like.
One week I exercised twice.
A couple of weeks I exercised three times.
One week I completed four sessions.
For many people, this would be a fairly active month. However, for many reasons I typically exercise almost daily.
A few years ago exercising only twice in one week would have probably caused me to panic. I have since learned sometimes life gets extremely busy, and during those times I do not exercise as much as I would like.
You are not likely to read this in an exercise textbook or on a government health website. Some fitness professionals may disagree, but sometimes life interferes with your exercise schedule and that is okay.
I would offer the gentle criticism of the fitness and exercise industries that oftentimes the ideas and theories are proposed in a somewhat sterile and inflexible manner. While theoretically I agree everyone should exercise a half-hour to an hour almost daily, I also have the experience of getting extremely busy and sometimes daily exercise is not being completely realistic.
Of course, it would be easy to misconstrue this point and rationalize a sedentary lifestyle. A sedentary lifestyle is psychologically and physically unhealthy. I am obviously not advocating that. I am talking instead about short-term reductions in exercise activity due to temporary increased time demands of work or family commitments.
The occasional week or weeks where you reduce your exercise time to accommodate an unusually busy schedule is not a big deal in my experience. In fact, in sports performance programming, we actually write in a "deload" week where activity levels are reduced every fourth week to produce maximal gains. So some activity reduction can actually be beneficial to a consistent exerciser.
By reducing your activity but still maintaining some activity, you can prevent the scenario where you go weeks or months with little real activity which is the true enemy.
Once you stop exercising for an extended time, your body becomes sluggish. Exercising seems like another burden. Soon weeks or even months pass without activity. It takes a huge psychological and physical effort to start again.
When you lead an active lifestyle, the opposite is true. Your body craves activity. When you do not exercise at your regular level, you do not feel quite right. That was exactly how I felt in January. I was itching to get back to my regular schedule. My body is so habituated to daily exercise that varying from that schedule is physically and mentally uncomfortable.
This is an example of what I often refer to as "the rich getting richer" with regard to physical fitness. I am not referring to financial wealth but rather "rich" in the sense of a high fitness level. The more active you are, the more your body craves activity. The leaner you are, the easier it is for your body to burn fat. The stronger you become, the more calories you can burn both during and after a workout.
You want to do whatever you can to avoid long layoffs which shift the above factors against you. Slowing down occasionally will not break your "rich getting richer" momentum but stopping completely will.
Therefore, it is important to do something even when you cannot do as much as you would like. Keep the train moving forward even if it is moving a little slower. A one week reduction in activity levels is not going to cause any significant regression.
I am now back to my normal routine of at least four exercise sessions per week. By doing what I could do in January, I was able to keep the train moving forward and get back on track once my schedule stabilized. Sometimes that is the best we can do.
